Glenn Kaino
Glenn Kaino is an internationally recognized artist known for his expansive and activist-minded approach, which includes painting, sculpture, installation, performance, monumental public art, theatrical production, and feature films.16 Born in Los Angeles in 1972, Kaino's work examines a variety of political, social, and environmental issues.46 He often adopts a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach, bringing together different systems of knowledge, production methods, and people.16
Kaino's art often highlights the mesmerizing effects of scientific and natural phenomena in large-scale installations, exploring empathy and subjectivity to clarify the often-invisible forces shaping the world.1 His practice is rooted in the belief that cultural production can effect real change, revealing structures of power and creating opportunities for progress.1
Kaino received a BA from the University of California, Irvine, and an MFA from the University of California, San Diego.82 He co-founded the Los Angeles artist-run space Deep River in 1997 and played a critical role in establishing arts organizations in the city.1 He is also a co-founder of Active Cultures, dedicated to the intersections of art and food.1 Kaino serves as a Board Member at MASS MoCA and a Member of the Board of Advisors at the Hammer Museum.73
Kaino's work has been showcased in the Whitney Biennial, the Biennale de Lyon, and Prospect.3, and he represented the United States at the Cairo Biennale.1 He has had solo exhibitions at various museums, including the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and the High Museum of Art.1 His works are part of the collections of the Hammer Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.15 Kaino is also an Emmy and Webby Award-winning producer and documentarian.6
