    Cheryl Blackman

    Cheryl Blackman is the Director of Museums and Heritage Services at the City of Toronto, responsible for overseeing ten city-owned and operated historical museums, the city's collection of historical objects, archaeological specimens, moveable fine art, and an extensive portfolio of heritage buildings.13

    Prior to her current role, Blackman served as the Assistant Vice-President of Audience Development at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), where she managed front-of-house operations, audience research, and acted as the Museum's liaison to over 1,300 volunteers.12 She also established the ROM's Community Access Network (ROMCAN), growing it to more than 80 partnerships with community organizations.12

    Blackman's educational background includes a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and a Master of Business Administration (MBA).12 She is also a Fellow of Inclusion and Philanthropy from the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).12

    In her current role, Blackman is leading initiatives to decolonize Toronto's museums and promote inclusivity. She launched "Awakenings," a series of art projects by BIPOC artists in collaboration with the City, aimed at revealing untold stories and perspectives at Toronto History Museums' sites.4 Blackman is committed to creating shared spaces and correcting the erasure of BIPOC stories in traditional European narratives.4

    Blackman has also served on various boards and committees, including as the Past President of the Ontario Museum Association Board and the Past Chair of the Board at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery.13 Her leadership focuses on fostering innovation, sustainability, and dynamic solutions to challenges facing the museum sector, particularly in the wake of COVID-19.3
