Assistant Professor of Biostatistics, UC Berkeley

Alejandro Schuler is an Assistant Professor in Residence in the Division of Biostatistics at UC Berkeley.15 His research focuses on developing methods for clinical decision-making that are economically or clinically necessary, statistically rigorous, and frictionless for the user.13 He is known for his work on NGBoost, the selectively adaptive lasso, and prognostic covariate adjustment.35 In addition to methods development, Schuler collaborates with clinicians to translate research questions into mathematical formalisms.35

Schuler received his Ph.D. in Biomedical Informatics from Stanford University in 2018.15 He also holds an M.S. in Controls and Dynamical Systems from UCLA and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley. Before becoming an Assistant Professor in Residence in July 2022246, Schuler was a Postdoctoral Scholar at UC Berkeley's Center for Targeted Machine Learning.7 He also worked as a Data Scientist at Kaiser Permanente's Division of Research and as a Biostatistician at Unlearn.AI.1 Schuler is passionate about pedagogy and making statistics accessible to everyone.13
